St Martin’s Tower is now 128 years old

On 15 October 1893the St Martin’s Tower was inaugurated.

Among those present were King Umberto I and Queen Margherita, together with a large crowd of citizens who had contributed to its construction thanks to public donations. Some of them were veterans of the Battle of 24 June 1859.

This unique monument tells the story of the Risorgimento and was built with the contribution of those who had fought for the independence of Italy.

Named after the King who unified Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, the Tower consists of a majestic entrance hall, the Hall of Recognitionand seven rooms: each of them represents an episode from the most important Battles of the Risorgimento.

The first room narrates the Charge of the Sardinian Grenadiers in the second Battle of Goito (1848), the second shows the Defence of Venice (1849), the third illustrates the battle of the Bersaglieri at the Cernaia River in the Crimean War (1855), the fourth, central room narrates the Battle of San Martino (1859).

Moving upwards in an ideal journey through time, we pass from the exploits of the Garibaldini engaged in the Battle of Volturno (1860) to the Quadrato di Villafranca (1866) to the last fresco depicting the Breach of Porta Pia (1870).

The Torre di San Martino and the nearby Museum, containing weapons, relics, uniforms and evidence of the battle, are open for visitors all year round.
