Società Solferino and San Martino and Spia d’Italia (the Spy of Italy)

On February 20Società Solferino and San Martino, founded in 1870, turned 153 years old. Another memorable anniversary was celebrated last year: the Millennium of the Rocca.

It was precisely Società Solferino and San Martino that took care of the restoration and turned the Spy of Italy into a monument, as you can also read in the new book by Professor Giusi Villari: “La Rocca di Solferino, Mille anni di storia (“The Fortress of Solferino, a Thousand years of history”, which will be published by GAM at the end of 2022.

To become a monument to the battle, the tower had to be restored, since it had stood “uncovered and disheveled” since 1759 and had been neglected throughout the following century. (…)

Ten years after the battle, Società Solferino and San Martino took on the difficult task of restoring the tower to usefulness by making it available for storing war relics and as a privileged observation point for the sites of the war battles“.

The precious volume, the result of important historical research, narrates the thousand years of the Fortress of Solferino: from the original fortification through the Gonzaga period, the Austrian domination, and up to the last years and is available in the bookshops of the Museums of Solferino and San Martino.

Until March 17, the Fortress remains closed and is accessible only to groups of at least 10 people: from this date, the anniversary of the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, the Spia d’Italia and the Solferino Museum will open again to all visitors, from Tuesday to Sunday.
